HANDGUN

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is for anyone who privately uses a handgun and or who requires a Competency Certificate in terms of relevant legislation.
Persons credited with this unit standard are capable of:
Handling a handgun.
Using a handgun.
Carrying out basic inspection and maintenance of a handgun for safe use.
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that learners are already competent in terms of the following unit standards:
117705: Demonstrate knowledge of the Firearms Control Act (Act No. 60 of 2000)

This unit standard applies to persons who will, through the application of knowledge of the current legislation, carry, handle, shoot and maintain a handgun for business purposes.
A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
Demonstrate knowledge of safe handling principles in a business environment.
Demonstrate knowledge of the mechanical functioning of the handgun.
Demonstrate knowledge of handgun use under adverse conditions.

This unit standard applies to persons who will need to use a handgun in a tactical environment for the purpose of private or public law enforcement or in the interest of personal development.
A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
Demonstrate pistol craft techniques.
Demonstrate shooting techniques in a business environment.
Operate a handgun in a controlled, stress induced environment.
Function as a member of a tactical team.
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is further assumed that the following unit standards relating to Handgun have been completed before attempting this unit standard:

EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS
Each student is required to bring the following equipment with to the training program:
Handgun with holster, 3 magazines and magazine pouch.
Tactical vest.
Knee and elbow pads.
Gloves.
Tactical torch.
Ballistic helmet (optional) or Bush hat.
Eye and hearing protection.
Medical kit – Tactical.
500 rounds of Handgun ammunition.
Own refreshments and meals.
