Firearm Training Solutions: 

Accredited Firearm Training

To legally apply for a firearm competency certificate (required to apply for a firearm licence), you must register for the required training course at a PFTC-accredited training provider using SAQA unit standards and registered instructors/assessors.  


The steps to follow to obtain a Proficiency Certificate and Competency to possess a Firearm:


Step 1: Meet the Basic Legal Requirements


You must:

  • Be 21 years or older

  • Be a South African citizen or permanent resident

  • Have no serious criminal record

  • Be mentally and physically fit

  • Have a valid SA ID


Step 2: Complete Accredited Firearm Proficiency Training


Enrol with a PFTC-accredited training provider.


You must complete:

  • Unit Standard 117705 – Knowledge of the Firearms Control Act

  • Unit Standard 119649 – Handle and Use a Handgun


    (Additional unit standards apply for shotgun, rifle, or self-loading rifle.)


Training includes:

  • Legal theory (Firearms Control Act)

  • Firearm safety & handling

  • Practical shooting assessment

  • Written knowledge test


Outcome: Firearm Proficiency Certificate with Statement of Results.



Step 3: Apply for SAPS Competency Certificate


Submit SAPS 517 (Competency Application) to the South African Police Service (SAPS).


You will need:

  • 3 x Certified ID copy 

  • Proficiency Certificate

  • Statement of Results

  • 2 x character references

  • Proof of address

  • 2 x Passport photos

  • Fingerprints (taken at SAPS)


Processing time: ± 90–120 days (Business days)


Outcome: Competency Certificate



Step 4: Purchase a Firearm


Once competent:


  • Purchase a firearm from a licensed dealer

  • Firearm remains with dealer until licence is approved


You will receive:


  • SAPS271 Application form with a SAPS 350a form containing the

  • Serial number

  • Dealer information

  • Firearm details for licence application




Step 5: Apply for Firearm Licence


Submit SAPS 271 (Licence Application) under the applicable section:


  • Section 13 – Self-defence

  • Section 15 – Occasional hunting/sport

  • Section 16 – Dedicated sport/hunting

  • Section 20 – Business purposes


Required documents:


  • Competency Certificate

  • Dealer documents

  • Detailed motivation (We can assist with this service)

  • Safe inspection photos of your installed safe. (Open & Close)


Processing time: ± 90–120 days (Business Days)


Outcome: Licence to Possess a Firearm



Step 6: Collect Your Firearm


Once approved:

  • Collect firearm from dealer

  • Licence card issued by SAPS


Outcome: GO HAVE SOME FUN!!!!!!

Courses available:

Legal Test

R450,00

The Legal Test is a Unit Standard, entry-level requirement for all other firearm Unit Standards. To apply for a new Competency to possess a firearm.

Handgun ( Business Use)

R1500,00

The Handle and Use a Handgun for Business Purposes course covers a higher level of proficiency than the Private Use course and is a requirement for security personnel and members of official institutions.

PLEASE NOTE: This course can only be done once you have completed the HANDLE AND USE HANDGUN (Private Use) course.
